The louvre is carried on broad ribs arranged so that they form a perfect eight-cornered star. Ribs are thrown from corner one to four and six, two to five and seven, three to six and eight, four to seven (and one), and five to eight (and two). By doing this a smaller octagon is left in the middle at the intersection of the ribs, which carried the louvre and carries a modern replica of the C18 lantern. This delightful method of vaulting has no parallel in England and may either be John Lewyn's invention or have been inspired by Mohammedan vaults in Spain (mosque, Cordova).
